Hyewon Hahn
MELIORA

Meliora (Latin) a noun meaning “ever better,” is a word that so readily describes the dynamic and layered work of Hyewon Hahn and is the title of this online exhibition. Showcasing Hahn’s undeniable technical ability, and her loving meditation on human interaction, Hahn’s paintings use acrylic and bees wax on panels to create depth and soul. Each knotting line is quite literally “ever better” as they grow and expand into one another. They exude chaos, yet within this chaos, one senses a deliberate placement, a reflection of life's ordered disorder.

In "Intimate Relations 1," a mesmerizing piece crafted in 2016, Hahn masterfully employs acrylic and bee wax on panel, rendering a 28 x 24 inch canvas that encourages exploration. The vines of life whirl and dodge above and below each other, weaving into a tapestry devoid of a beginning or end. A tapestry of ever evolving connections and rhythmic patterns that construct our lives. Hahn’s artistic acumen allows her to keenly observe these patterns in life and the metamorphosis of human nature. One is always adapting, growing, and transforming.

Hahn's “Life Beginning Movement 1,” made in 2019 with acrylic on canvas, too explores the notion of Meliora. The dawn of life starts with a crash and a bang of exploding colors and established interwebs of meaning. Each brushstroke represents the interconnectedness of life's nascent moments, a dance of vibrant energies forging the pathways of our collective journey.

Through this collection, Hahn invites us to reflect on our own journey towards being "ever better." As we navigate the intricacies of life, may we find solace and inspiration in the evolving patterns and interconnectedness that define our human experience.
