ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
In 1967, the Beatles released All You Need is Love. It was an instant sensation. It resonated with
contemporary culture for its message of love and world peace, becoming a trademark for the
Summer of Love. The song is known for its asymmetric time and complex changes in beats and
measures and repetitive patterns varying in intensity, much like love itself. Love involves care,
closeness, as well as attraction. Continuing to explore the creative spirit of abstract expression,
Rollins paints a new mode of being revealing ever new close connections with her materials and
ultimately with the viewer.
Faced with the difficulty of isolation during the pandemic, we have
all learned to appreciate the meaning of care and closeness with family, friends, neighbors, and
community. And artists have taken note. Employing the formal elements of design with
seasoned intensity, Rollins captures the transcendent value of art and the creative imagination
to uplift the viewer’s own sense of well-being and connectivity. There is an immediacy to
Rollins’ work. Vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines weave throughout the picture plane
connecting in an asymmetrical design. Repetitive patterns of color and shape move the eye
across the composition; their complex twists, turns, and forms varying in intensity and tone
evoking a visceral response. This newest body of work underscores how life on the edge of a
global health crises brooks the need for a reexamination of what it means to be human, to
express the ineffable need to connect with one another. The viewer’s conclusion can only be
one of “All You Need is Love.”
