David Datuna

David Datuna was born in 1974 in Tbilisi, Georgia, and began painting after he moved to New York City. A self-taught artist, Datuna’s work takes abstraction to an orbit of new expression and vantage points. By merging craft and technology with mixed media, Datuna fabricates his compositions to evoke social, political, and cultural identification. Superimposing prescription lenses on painted substrates of flags, globally recognized brands, or portraits of famous people, places, and various publications, the artist creates a visual dialectic wherein the lenses concomitantly distort reality and focalize the imagery. Of his work Datuna writes, “The lenses symbolically express individual identity, illusion, perception, fragmentation, and unification…The network of positive and negative lenses expresses the multiple points of view we all share from within.” Datuna exhibits widely in the US, Europe and Asia, and is well represented in important private collections worldwide.
